When Year 5 were asked to think of the names of famous scientists, they were shocked to reflect upon the overwhelming proportion of white males that came to mind. The children discussed at length as to why this was and were quick to draw the conclusion that this was nothing to do with the worth of black scientists, but everything to do with societal barriers and prejudice faced by black people. Year 5 enjoyed spending time learning about the lives of a selection of black female scientists who have made an incredible impact to STEM, including Katherine Johnson and Dr Gladys West. All of the children were amazed by the accomplishments of these women and the impact they continue to have around the world today.
