Jaguar Primary School Challenge

We are incredibly proud of our year 5 and 6 STEM engineers who competed in the regional finals of the Jaguar Primary School Challenge on 26th March. All three teams worked very hard leading up to the competition, designing and manufacturing a model car to race along the 25m track, fired by a Co2 canister!

F1 STEM Challenge

The whole school enjoyed our Formula 1 STEM competition! Children were tasked with creating a model racing car that would travel as fast as possible down a 0.5m track. Everybody worked very well together as a team designing and manufacturing their cars. The races were really exciting and resulted in a Year 5 team coming in first place!

Zulus at NPS

On Wednesday , our school was treated to a visit by the Mighty Zulu Nation Theatre Company. At the start of the day, a superb performance of dance, acrobatics, music and singing inspired the whole school. Lucky teachers and children joined the Zulus on stage to show their skils too, before most classes returned to their normal timetable with the Zulu beats still resonating within them.

Dino Day

Reception and Year 6 had a fantastic morning on Dino Day. Our Year 6 helpers were brilliant with the younger children and supported them in fossil making, dinosaur biscuit baking and junk modelling their very own dinosaur. The excitement was palpable and Reception were thrilled with their creations.

To finish off our 1920s History topic, Year 6 were able to watch the classic musical Singing in the Rain. The purpose of this was to help the children understand how talking pictures came about and how successful they were. Everybody really enjoyed this and learned a lot!

On Thursday 10th January we were very excited to have the Premier League Trophy visit our school. The whole school enjoyed an assembly from the trophy minders, Guy and Patrick, who told us lots of interesting facts about the trophy, including which teams have won it and how much it weighs (4 stone!).

Remembrance Day at NPS

Cricket

Our under 9 cricket teams enjoyed a fabulous afternoon of cricket in Durham with 3 other local schools. In total we played 6 and won three. All the games were very close; the drinks and snacks were certainly well earned! Special credit should go to the batting of Robbie, the bowling of Fraser, and the all-round performances of the twins Mason and Lewis! Names to watch for the future we are sure.

Healthy Eating

Year 6 had an enjoyable morning learning all about nutrition with our chef, Shaun, and a Nutritionist from Chartwells. After an assembly on eating a healthy, balanced diet, we were excited take part in a workshop with Claire where we were able to taste test lots of fruits and vegetables such as: peaches, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, passionfruit, nectarines, blueberries and kiwi fruit.

Wartime Cookery

Using our knowledge of measures, today in Year 6 we used some wartime recipes to make meals using rations. We had to follow the recipe carefully and weigh out ingredients in ounces rather than grams (with some help). After all of our hard work, we then got to taste them. Some recipes were nicer than others!

Secret Bunker Challenge

Year 6 enjoyed learning about the secret underground bunker in Kenton, Newcastle, which was used to defend the North against enemy attack during WW2. On loan from the Discovery Museum, artefacts were used to enable Year 6 to imagine they were in the bunker during the Battle of Britain. Their task was to complete 4 activities that would have been vital to the protection of the North East during this time. Everyone was very surprised to learn that there was this secret underground bunker so close to home and it still stands today.

On 27th February the Theatre sans Frontieres visited NPS to perform a French play called La Chanson du Retour. The children had learnt songs and key vocabulary beforehand and because the play was all in French, they learned a Lot and had fun at the same time!

Two teams of brainboxes fought hard in this years Quiz Club at Yarm School. The questions were far too tricky for Mr Waller and Mrs Cressey, but our clever teams managed to excel themselves with their wonderful general knowledge, coming out with 2nd and 3rd place in the competition.

Year 3 had a wonderful day celebrating a Victorian Christmas to end our Victorian topic. We learned all about the Victorian Christmas traditions which we still have in 2017 such as Christmas cards, Christmas trees and Christmas dinner. At the weekend, Jasper travelled to Colby, near Peterborough , to the Junior Inter-League Final, a national swimming final. In his individual 50 m front crawl, he came third, which makes him the third fastest swimmer in the country for 9 year olds!

Seven Stories

Year 6 had a wonderful morning visiting the Comic Book exhibition at Seven Stories. After a tour, we explored the exhibition space and found all sorts of things to look at and do. We particularly enjoyed the Wardrobe Of Possible Impossibilities where we were given super powers. Reading comics, describing characters and group discussions preceded the final creative activity in the studio.

Gardening at NPS

Year 1 are eagerly awaiting the growth of the sunflower seeds they planted during their visit to Wyevale Garden Centre, Gosforth Park. Staff at the garden centre took time out of their busy day to talk to the children about the plants and flowers and how they are cared for. It was a feast for the senses as we explored, looked at and touched the leaves and petals. The children were surprised at how strong a smell was given out by the herb plants and lavender plants.

Aladdin

On Tuesday night the children in Year 5 performed songs from Aladdin. With singing, dancing, and some impressive magic tricks to boot, it was hard to believe the children were only 9 years old, and not professional actors. The evening saw magic flying carpets, mystical smoking lamps, and a charmed snake rising from a basket. The bright colours of the colourful costumes along with vivid scenery and customary pyrotechnics brought the whole show to a new level of excellence, making the large team of staff involved incredibly proud.

On Friday 31st March, Year 6 had a wonderful morning with Richard (also known as That History Bloke!) investigating home life in Britain during World War 2. Richard brought a whole range of genuine, historical artefacts which we enjoyed examining and investigating. The dressing up was certainly a hit!

This week we have been using clay to create 3D versions of our Chinese dragon masks. To make our dragons we created our very own pinch pots joining them securely together to form the head. Then with careful planning we cut out mouths and added eyes and noses from slabs of clay.

On Monday Reception went to Adventure Valley to take part in a mini-beast work-shop. The children had a great time handling and learning about the resident insects and reptiles at Adventure Valley. After lunch we were able to explore the rest of the farm including going on a tractor ride!

Children in Years 4 to 6 have enjoyed learning a range of sewing skills at sewing club this term. We began with a modern day sampler, making a coaster showing off lots of different embroidery stitches. The children have then gone on to design their own keyring, creating their own template and showing off stitches.

Year One spent a very enjoyable morning touring the studios of BBC Newcastle. The main purpose of the trip was to try the weather-forecasting skills we have learnt during our topic - A Force of Nature. The children were amazed by the green screen technology which took a little getting used to. Once they figured out which way to point, they were as good as professionals!

Conducting and Performing

1Y children have been composing and practising the art of conducting through their topic of A Force of Nature. Using rain maker instruments the children made, they performed their thunder storm compositions and took turns at conducting their group. A cake fit for a Queen

Year 5 pupil, Harry took his weekend homework one step further, when he was asked to design a cake to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday. He not only designed a cake, but he and his Mum decided to put their design to the test and make the cake. In fact, they made two. The design included 3 layers of vanilla sponge, coloured red, white and blue and was topped with fresh strawberries. In addition, Harry decorated the cake with home-made flags and mini fact files, as well as three sprigs of hand tied heather, the Queen's favourite flower.

First Steps Nursery had a fantastic day at Hall Hill Farm in Lanchester. Everyone enjoyed meeting all the animals, learning lots of new facts from the farmer and his helpers. We even had a ride around the fields in the tractor and milked a cow!

Maximus

Year three travelled back in time to meet Maximus, a centurion based on Hadrians Wall. We learned all about life in the Roman Army and even had the opportunity to become Roman soldiers ourselves, learning how to march and form a tortoise. We made a necklace to show which Legion we belonged to, some Roman standards and our own Roman board games. After such a busy day we think we understand how a Roman soldier must have felt!

Bugs n Stuff

On the first day of our science week we were visited by Guy Tansley and his mini-beasts and reptiles. The younger children were given the chance to see, touch and be playgrounds for a variety of insects, arachnids, myriapods and reptiles. From tarantulas and scorpions to corn snakes there were plenty of scary beasts but the children almost to a one were smiling and enjoying the experience.

This half term our topic is Spring and Lifecycles. On Monday morning, our ten eggs, incubator and brooder box were delivered along with a poster and some manuals. We were all very excited as we were told that the eggs would hatch on Wednesday. We had to look after the eggs carefully to make sure the chicks had the best possible start.

On 20th January Hope travelled down to London to visit the Houses of Parliament and her MP, Catherine McKinnell. Having been interested in politics since the age of 6, it was Hope’s dream to watch David Cameron and see for herself what life is like in the House of Commons.

Year 1 had another brilliant trip to the Centre for Life! We were busy exploring the robots exhibit and even took part in a Bee-Bot workshop. We used our coding skills to move the Bee-Bot around different obstacles. We had a great day and can not wait to go back soon.
